Last Minute Gifts Ideas for the Holidays!

NOTE: Brad was unable to make this month's meeting due to a scheduling conflict. We are still trying to arrange for Brad to join us at an upcoming meeting.

As we are heading into the holiday season, we thought it would be fun and helpful to take a look at computer gifts for the holidays. Our surprise guest (well not any more) will be Brad Koltz of the Essex County News organization (Salem Evening News, etc.). Brad will take a look at "What's Hot and What's Not This Holiday Season."

NOTE: The represntative from CompUSA did not show up for the meeting. There has been no communication from them as to the reason.

We'll also have a representative from CompUSA who will demonstrate a number of items which might be great gifts for that hard to buy person on your list. Gifts will be identified for under $25 and under $50. If you have any great wish list ideas of your own, join us and share.

It's also our 5th birthday this month. We will be celebrating with cake and cookies. It is hard to believe that we have been a real independent group for that long, but here we are, still kicking after half a decade. Don't miss the party.

Medical Resources on the Net!

One of the fast-growing arenas on the Web is medical information. It is also one of the most controversial areas to those seeking answers to important questions. Opinions abound online about illnesses and medical conditions, both common and rare.

To help guide us safely through the virtual mine field of who knows what regarding health issues, Dr. Robert Langston, physician and computer enthusiast, joined us again to review a roadmap on where to go and how to find mediacal resources on the Web. He was also helpful in pointing the way towards finding details on medical reports and research covering our medical concerns.

Here's a series of medical Web links used in this month's meeting.

October 11, 2001 - Thursday, 7:00PM

E-books & Antiques!

Hypertext Publishing, Hypertext Tools and E-books:
Eastgate Systems publishes hypertexts -- original work written for the computer. Eastgate chief scientist Mark Bernstein demonstrated some of the tools Eastgate has developed for literary hypertext, and discussed why electronic books are more important (and much more difficult) than ebook readers.

For the past fifteen years, Eastgate has been publishing original hypertexts and hypertext tools. According to Mark Bernstein, "Ebooks are unimportant, but the future of serious writing will flourish on the computer screen." Eastgate Systems can be found on the Web at www.eastgate.com/.

Antiques, Collectibles and the Internet:
Because of technical difficulties, Milissa Putman, a new member of the Northshore Computer Society, was unable to make her presentation how to use the Internet to learn more about the antiques and collectibles that you may have in your home. We hope to re-schedule her presentation for an upcoming meeting.

Melissa has been collecting pottery and illustrated children's books for over 15 years. She can be reached at krom@gis.net.

Digital Photography & Adobe's Hot Web Products!

Digital Photography:
William MacKenzie, Chief of Police of Wenham will be discussing Digital Cameras and Photography. Chief MacKenzie has been an avid computer buff since the early eighties and for thirty years has been his police department's photographer and identification technician, photographing crime scenes and motor vehicle accidents. When he took over as Chief of Police in nineteen ninety-five, he purchased the departments first digital camera. Impressed with the technology he decided to buy his own digital camera.

Over the past four years he has combined two of his hobbies, nature walks and photography. "I used to take regular film photos, but the expense enforced rigid restrictions on experimentation and subject matter. Now I sometimes take 200 shots on a weekend walk."

Adobe's Hot Web Products:
Timothy Plumer Jr., Application Engineer with Adobe Systems, will be demonstrating Adobe's Hottest New Web Products. Adobe has some of the premier products for building your Web site including Photoshop, Golive, Illustrator and LiveMotion.

Street Atlas USA & Computers in Law Enforcement

The first meeting of the New Year was a double-header!

For part of the meeting, member Dave Petersen conducted a demonstration of Street Atlas USA 8.0. This package facilitates detailed portal-to-portal trips between two, or more, addresses in the United States. It also allows the user to locate significant points of interest anywhere in the country.

Also speaking at the January meeting was Sgt. William Terry of the Beverly Police Department, a graduate of Northeastern University with a BS degree in Criminal Justice. Sgt. Terry has 18 years service with the Beverly PD and he is involved with training, grants, and the BPD computer system. Sgt. Terry gave us a presentation about the role computers play in law enforcement and the modern police department.
